Description:
|
The reverse of this bronze medal commemorates the British victory at the Battle of Camperdown and features Dutch Admiral De Winter surrendering his sword to British Admiral Duncan. Both men are dressed in military uniform; however, Duncan’s uniform is more decorated compared to De Winter’s. De Winter holds his hat in his hand as a sign of defeat as he surrenders his sword to Duncan. In exergue there is a trophy of arms celebrating the British victory and surrounding the scene are the inscriptions “DUTCH FLEET DEFEATED,” “9 SHIPS OF THE LINE CAPTURED,” “11 OCT 1797,” “W. WYON,” and “MUDIE D.”
